Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) wishes to acknowledge the sad and sudden passing of ELCA member Darryl Pepper AFSM, and express its condolences to his family.
After serving with the Royal Australian Navy, Darryl commenced his firefighting career with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service on the Gold Coast in 1974, was promoted to District Officer in 1988, then Assistant Commissioner South East Region in 1995, followed by Assistant Commissioner South West Region 1997. In 1994 and 2001 Darryl led contingents of firefighters from Queensland who assisted during bushfire emergencies in NSW. In January 2002 Darryl was appointed Director and Chief Fire Officer, Fire and Emergency Services NT, where he had responsibility for both the fire and rescue service and state emergency service. During his time as Director and Chief Fire Officer Darryl served as a Councillor on the peak body for fire and emergency services in Australia and NZ, AFAC.
Darryl will be sadly missed by all those who knew and worked with him and benefitted from his leadership. We are grateful for Darryl’s work with and support for ELCA and its mission to highlight the dangers of climate change and the need for governments to do more to curb climate pollution.
